Ladies, Wine &
a bit of Design in Johannesburg

A conversation series
by Jessica Walsh, hosted by Kirsten Townsend for Designers in Johannesburg

A salon night held monthly will be limited to six creative ladies. We’ll wine, dine, and have casual conversations on a wide variety of topics relating to creativity, business, and life. If you’re a female student or creative and would like to join, please do email me.

Monday, 18 April, 7pm Warm up.

As the first of hopefully many events, I'd love to kick off this series with people who would like to join the Johannesburg committee and discuss future topics and events. The evening will be held at Priest Espressobar in Rosebank.

Wednesday, 18 May, 7pm Work in Progress

Bring a piece you’re working on whether it is a commercial piece, or a person piece and lets all talk about the work and share thoughts.

Wednesday, 1 June, 6pm Design & Business

For designers who want to start their own studio or freelance career one day, lets talk about business. I’ll answer questions and let you know what I know. We hope to have a guest speaker to answer your questions as well.

Wednesday, 6 July, 6pm Creative Labels

Art director? Designer? Illustrator? Do you want to specialize, or generalize, or are you unsure? Let’s talk about what each label entails, and what you should label yourself.

Wednesday, 17 August, 6pm Inspiration Session

Let's share some work from people who inspire each of us in our creative process -perhaps that work may inspire another person in the room.

With so many ladies owning, or starting businesses, we could all do with a little financial advice and legal guidance. Specialist Catherine Bradley, from Streetlight Finances is coming to give us a better understanding on how to go about doing all the things you don't want to do. Come with any business related questions you may have.

Sunday, 11 December, 12pm End-of-Year: African Extravaganza

Because End-of-Year parties aren't only for those who work in full-time jobs! We will be having an end of year function for all freelancers, small business owners, and entrepreneurs.
The lunch is hosted by The Cook's Table, and all proceeds go towards a good cause.

Having worked in advertising, publishing, and branding in South Africa, I have seen and experienced a lot of agency life -sometimes being the only girl in the 'boys club'. I climbed the ladder in and amongst, rising to Creative Director at the no.1 Branding and Design agency in South Africa -Grid Worldwide. Now leaving and starting my own Creative Consultancy, I wonder what has happened to other female creatives who had similar journeys to mine. A couple years ago I as asked to put forward a female creative whom I admired for a local creative blog during Women's Month. I struggled to find a female, those putting themselves out there were few and far between. I hope that Ladies, Wine & Design can become a platform for collaboration and sharing of ideas.

Numbers show that there's a very small percentage of women leading the creative industry. However, I find the people I’m inspired by most are often other talented ladies. Here are a few South African women I have admired, worked with, or had my eye on! Email me if you want to nominate someone for this list, especially women in South Africa.
