12th of October 2023, 7pm Fail Better Talk

We’re really excited to announce our next event, in partnership with Fail Better Talks.

Fail Better is a talk series that asks gutsy creatives to share failures they've experienced in their careers and more importantly, what they've learned from it. We all make mistakes, so why not learn from each other's cock-ups? The evening will finish with an open mic. What story will you tell?

Our speakers are:

Tanya Motsi - a London based, but internationally focused Creative Director and Spatial Designer who works across events, installations, exhibitions and experiential campaigns. Her somewhat unorthodox career journey, which spanned several industries like architecture, e-commerce and set design, has meant she's had to adapt, and sometimes survive various work cultures and environments. She's navigated the dynamics of freelance, in-house and agency worlds with varying levels of success, and sometimes failure. Tanya hopes to bring some candid truths to this event, and talk to the realities of trying to balance your values with work, when they don't centre your professional life at all.

Stefanie Sword Williams - a TEDx speaker, founder and author of F*ck Being Humble. She created the business to encourage individuals to be unapologetically proud of their achievements and overcome the fear of self-promotion. Named as Forbes 30 Under 30 in Europe, Stef talks have reached people in over 50 countries and she’s delivered workshops for global brands including Apple, Unilever, Google, Adidas, Unilever, Microsoft, Innocent, Vodafone, The Guardian, The BBC as well as spoken at conferences such as Cannes Lions Festival and D&AD New Blood. In 2020 Stef released her first book ‘F*ck Being Humble: Why self-promotion isn't a dirty word’ and also delivered a TEDx Talk on why the world needs to be a little less humble. Most recently she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts following the significant contribution to social impact she has made since building F*ck Being Humble.

Simren Degun - a vibrant Designer of South Asian heritage. She is currently working at DesignBridge, with six years experience in other top tier agencies across London. Simren counts brand identity, packaging, editorial and digital design to her list of varied talents.

Simren’s design process is grounded in research, drawing on references from a diverse range of cultural and historical sources to help brands find their voice. She has worked with large brands including Diageo, H&M, PepsiCo, Lego and Unilever as well as more niche brands, such as Fortnum & Mason and Deakin & Blue.
Her motto is “Better futures through Design” and is known to champion diversity and gender equality in the creative industries. Simren is running projects to help drive transformation, whilst being an active mentor and volunteer to young creative talent for D&AD Shift, D&AD New Blood and Accumulate - a program which helps the homeless and ex homeless enter creative industries.

The event will take place on Thursday 12th of October at 7pm at Yonder Consulting.

Note this event is open to men as well as women and non-binary creatives. It is also BYOB, so bring along your favourite drink.

11th of May 2023, 7pm Sidestepping Careers

We are thrilled to be hosting our next event on side stepping in the creative industry.

Come and hear from a panel of ladies who have gone beyond their design career and side stepped into strategy, creative recruitment, partnerships and client services. You’ll be hearing about their career progression, followed by questions from the audience.

Meet our speakers:
Anoushka Rodda,
TEMPLO Managing Director and Co-Founder
Anoushka began her career as a designer after graduating with a First Class graphic design BA Hons from Kingston University. She then decided to direct her skills to account management, and now has nearly twenty years experience in the design industry.
Having seen the impact of war and human rights violations first hand (her grandmother was born in Aleppo in Syria, her grandfather was forced to leave his home in Turkey as a child during the Armenian genocide and her mother left Beirut during the civil war) Anoushka set up TEMPLO determined to use the positive power of design for social change.

Anoushka has had experience with a broad range of sectors from education to charity. Anoushka has worked with the United Nations, Amnesty International, London School of Economics, University of the Arts London and the British Council.

She is a guest lecturer at Kingston University, London College of Communication and Arts University Bournemouth and is a mentor for design students interested in the world of design management.

Nikky Lyle
Creative recruiter, Team Lead at Oneday
Nikky initially started her career as a creative. She studied at Falmouth University, but fell into creative recruitment and stayed in that sector over a decade. During that time she delivered a TEDx talk on Recruiting with conscience when hiring diverse talent, was a regular mentor, judge and speaker for D&AD, became a Domestika teacher, mentored for Outvertising and Kerning the Gap, as well as being awarded as the Dots 100+ Rising Stars.

Now her newest venture is Team Lead for an exciting new tech start up venture called Oneday. She's gone from helping people find jobs to helping entrepreneurs build their businesses.

Ornella Jefferson
Partnerships Manager at It’s Nice That
Ornella studied Marketing Design and Communication at Nottingham Trent University. Her education gave her a strong foundation in marketing strategy, visual communication, and graphic design, providing the skills to effectively communicate and promote products, services, and brands.

However, Ornella’s career led her into partnerships/sales roles, where for the last 6 years she became an accomplished media professional with a talent for building and maintaining strong relationships. Ornella has worked with brands such as Adobe, Apple, and Google. She is also passionate about supporting inclusion and racially diverse talent pools and has worked with various brands to communicate their role in investing in a more racially diverse future for the creative industries.

Ornella has also co-founded 'Power In Potential’, a personal development programme that supports and equips young black women with tools to effectively combine their skills, talents, and life experiences in order to find their unique place in the ever-evolving creative industry.

Jenny Cook
Strategist at Design Bridge
Jenny Cook is a creative, ideas-driven strategist working at Design Bridge & Partners London. With over nine years’ experience in the creative industries, Jenny began her career as a graphic designer, working across global FMCG brands in food, drink, and personal care.

Jenny's analytical and human-centred approach led her to transition into brand strategy. Her curious and creative mindset enables her to tackle complex consumer-brand challenges and translate them into rich, design-led solutions. She believes in the power of creativity to spark joy, transform behaviour, and create a more inclusive and sustainable world.

8th of April 2022, 7pm Creative Gym - Ceramic Workshop

This month we’re excited to host our first in-person indoors event in 2 years!

Jessie Thavonekam will host us for a special ceramic class at Cernamic Studio (36A Windus Rd, London N16 6UP) on Friday 8th of April at 7pm

Jessie is a designer who moonlights as a ceramicist. Pottery started as an after-work hobby to actively engage in a practice that doesn't require computer screens. The hobby turned into a side hustle during the pandemic and she started selling pieces online at Atelier Jessie.
Using a curated palette of colours and texture, Jessie's work is made in small batches for the considered home.

Jessie also teaches classes at Cernamic studio, and has offered to run a special 2-hour session for us. You will learn the traditional techniques of hand building like coiling, slabbing, and pinch pot, to create beautiful pieces and develop a practice that embraces organic forms. This course is great for beginners or anyone who'd like to rekindle their love for ceramic. The class cost £18, and at the end of the session you’ll choose which pots you want to keep and choose to glaze then a selection of transparent, white, or dark blue. Each pot will cost an additional £5 to glaze and be fired twice after the class. The cost of the pots can be paid with cash or via online banking at the end of the night.

We’re really excited to announce that our next event will be a Tête-a-tête with Bandcamp

Bandcamp is an online record store and music community where passionate fans connect with and directly support the artists they love. Jessica Walsh started Ladies, Wine & Design in New York after doing a lot of thinking and reading on why there are so few women creative directors. She believes we can change that through mentorship and championing others' work. We couldn't agree more, and we also think it would be fun to meet other lady creatives, so we reached out to her and Ladies, Wine & Design London was born.

Numbers show that there is a very small percentage of women leading the creative industry. Here are a few women based in the UK we have come to admire. Email us if you want to nominate someone for this list.
