March 30th 2023, 7pm Meet the Creative: Brenda Waegemaekers

Introducing the first of the series: 'Meet the Creative'! A way to get to know other brilliant and talented creatives in the local community. We're so honored to kick it off with the one and only Brenda Waegemaekers.

Brenda is a creative, copywriter, and daydreamer. Born in the Netherlands, she’s currently working under the holy roof of KesselsKramer, the independent communications agency based in a church in Amsterdam. She believes that good communication needs honesty, and that empathy is one of the most overlooked skills in our industry.

What gets your creativity flowing?
"Embracing the messiness of a creative process. To me feeling ‘creative’ comes in waves, so in that sense, it flows. Sometimes I struggle, sometimes I’m really into it. And when I have an idea, I need to let it rest for a bit to come back to it with new eyes. Recently I moved into a new apartment, and in a way it’s like interior design: don’t finish it all at once. Start with a vision, slowly start adding things; remove, remodel and reshuffle until it all feels very feng shui. Then change it all up again."

Where do you feel most creative?
"In bed (where I can’t sleep). On the dancefloor (where I can’t think). Or in the church (where I can’t help but confess my creative sins)."

What is your go-to way of beating creative blocks?
"I try to think about the problem a bit longer and about the creative a little less long. By questioning the topic and digging for a truth, eventually it all ‘clicks’ in my head.
Another way of beating them is through conversations with people outside the creative industry. It’s often when I talk to people with a completely different profession or outlook on the world that things get interesting."

Read more of Brenda's insightful wisdom and interview in our upcoming newsletter and be sure to follow her and check out more of her creative work at www.brendawaegemaekers.com

November 21st, 2021 Dampsquid Animation Screening

We're excited to announce a new upcoming event “Dampsquid", a brand new animation-focused event aimed at creating space for women and non-binary animators to showcase their work.

The screening will take place at 2pm on November 21st at De Nieuwe Anita. Get your tickets for free through the link in bio ♥️

Dampsquid originated out of the desire to connect female and non-binary animators with the rest of the creative community, animation fans and beyond. The event will provide a platform for sharing work, discovering new talent and broadening the horizons of animation. Women and non-binary creators are heavily underrepresented in the animation industry, Dampsquid seeks to challenge that. You can expect an evening filled with offbeat shorts, discussions, GIF’s you want to send to your mum, glorious motion graphics and other bits and pieces!

Dampsquid is an inclusive event, open to everyone, of all genders, identities and ages. Whether you are an animation enthusiast, designer or simply someone looking to find inspiration, join us for an evening of visual snacking and fun!

Dampsquid is the creation of Moon, a Netherlands-based creative with a background in illustration and passion for all things animated. Moon’s creative practice adds up to one common theme, bringing communities and people together. After being involved in several animation events across the Netherlands, they noticed a lack of a platform for women and non-binary creators in the animation world and so the Dampsquid concept was born

March 25th, 2021 The Upside of Your Meltdown

Meltdowns. 2020 was full of them. Many of us had at least one breaking point –or ten– in the past year.
Other than the term suggests, meltdowns can be a force of good. Back-2-back meeting outbursts, bad news despair, everything-from-home exhaustion, muted screaming and solitude sobbing can help you reduce stress, think more clearly and understand yourself better. Your low could be your high when you know how to own it.
Join Rachel Kennedy (Creative Director at 180 Amsterdam), Brenda Waegemaekers (Creative/Copywriter at KesselsKramer) and Brigit Jans (Leadership Coach at Spring Coaching) in a talk that flips the script on meltdowns.
This session will include lessons on how to make your next meltdown a productive one, along with some personal experiences and interactive play. Here’s what not keeping it together can do for you.

About the event:

Self-promotion. Something we should all do more of, yet it's not always easy to overcome the fear of putting yourself out there in front of the world. December 5th, 2019 LWD x 180 Kingsday: Failing Up, Fast Learnings

The next Ladies, Wine and Design event is for anyone who has ever failed. Six women from across Amsterdam’s creative industry will be taking to the stage to share their own stories of things that didn’t quite go to plan. For many of us, the burn of failure lingers longer than success, so our aim on this most festive night is to reclaim the fail and find the lessons that propel us on, rather than bring us down

October 31, 2019 LWD x 180 Kingsday: Be the Leader You Don't See

If self-help books are to be believed, leadership is a numbers game. A box-ticking exercise that can be easily achieved by following a set of rules outlined by those who have gone before us. But rules, as we know, are there to be broken. Rachel Kennedy, art director at 180 Kingsday, leads a panel of unique and different leaders to discuss how they are approaching leadership, and how they are learning to be the leaders they are and not the leaders they have been told to be.

Please join Rachel, Raja Felgato (Media Entrepreneur and Founder of The Diversity Top 100 and FATIMA), Laura Visco (Executive Creative Director at 72&Sunny Amsterdam), Merida Miller (founder of Project Fearless) and a room full of other local creative ladies for a fun and insightful night!

Jessica Walsh started Ladies, Wine & Design in New York after doing a lot of thinking and reading on why there are so few women creative directors. She believes we can change that through mentorship and championing others' work. We couldn't agree more, and we also think it would be fun to meet other lady creatives, so we reached out to her and Ladies, Wine & Design Amsterdam was born.
