Ladies, Wine & Design

Ladies, Wine &
a bit of Design

A conversation series
started by Jessica Walsh
Hosted by Shawn Calvin in Detroit

A salon night - limited to 6 individuals - held for creative lady professionals. We'll wine, dine, and have casual conversations on topics relating to creativity, business, and life. If you're a female creative and would like to join or know more, please email Shawn Calvin. Events are meant to be sponsored. We currently have 5 ladies that regularly meat bi-monthly and the sixth seat is reserved for a reach-out guest. We invite a curious group of women to chat about the current climate of design, especially in Detroit, and our role in creating a future of design lead by women.

May 18 - 7pm Premiere Event

Welcome to our premiere !! At this event we will brainstorm goals, future topics of discussion, workshops and overall vision for this conversation series.

July 20 - 6pm The Art of Making

We are engaging in a hands-on tour of Signal Return while discussing the following:
· Where do creative ideas come from?
· How do you start a process in order to come up with a good idea?
· What are the best methods or tricks for working creatively?

Oct 26 - 6pm Interpretation

How are labels interpreted? Are you a designer? Maker? Creative? Illustrator? Are you a generalist? Specialized? How does your label affect perceptions of your friends, family, colleagues? Is it advantageous to change their interpretation/perception? If so, how can we change the interpretation/perception?

Dec - TBD

Jessica Walsh started Ladies, Wine & Design in New York after doing a lot of thinking and reading on why there are so few women creative directors. She believes we can change current statistics through mentorship and championing others' work. We couldn't agree more. Here are some articles that inspired us to start a Detroit chapter of Ladies, Wine & Design:

Where are all the Women Creative Directors?
Ladies, Wine & Design - The Original (NYC)
Design Census 2016
What We Can Do About the Dearth of Female Creatives?
Gender Disparities in the Design Field

Numbers show that there's a very small percentage of women leading the creative industry. However, we find the people we are inspired by most are often other talented ladies. Here are a few women we have admired, worked with, or had our eye on! Email us if you want to nominate someone for this list.
